"Invading Taiwan Is Not the End of China's Problems" - U.S. Security Expert Ralph A. Cossa Analyzes the Taiwan Strait Situation

In recent years, the Taiwan Strait has become a focal point of escalating tensions and competition between the two superpowers, the US and China. Following Taiwan’s National Day, Chinese military aircraft conducted large-scale incursions, with 12 aircraft crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait. The next day, China claimed to have dispatched fighter jets to monitor and warn a US Navy patrol plane flying over the Taiwan Strait. Despite efforts to avoid war, the risk of miscalculation remains.

Ralph Cossa, President Emeritus and WSD-Hanada Chair of the Pacific Forum, told The Storm Media during an interview in Taiwan that neither China nor the US wants war, "because they would lose." He believes that an unprovoked attack on Taiwan by China would lead to China’s own collapse. Cossa emphasized that US-China relations are not as tense as perceived by the public, and the most important issue now is to prevent "accidental clashes," similar to the 2001 mid-air collision between US and Chinese jets. Given China's extreme nationalism, President Biden's re-election pressure, and the highly tense political climate in the US, handling such incidents would be more challenging. Both sides need better management skills to deal with potential scenarios.
