Dr. Michael Hsin-Huang HSIAO
Dr. H. H. Michael Hsiao is Chairman of Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation and Chairman of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at National Chengchi University. He is also an Adjunct Research Fellow, Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, and an Chair Professor of Hakka Studies, National Central University,Taiwan. He served as National Policy Advisor to the President of Taiwan between 1996 and 2006 and is currently Senior Advisor to the President of Taiwan. He is also Chairman of the Consortium of Southeast Asian Studies in Asia (SEASIA).
Dr. Hsiao's areas of specialization include middle class, civil society, and democratization in Asia; environmental movements, sustainability and risk society; and comparative Hakka studies in Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
His most recent book publications are: The Diverse Manifestations of Hakka Ethnicity in Southeast Asia (co-editor, 2024), Southeast Asia, Ethnic Chinese Hakka, and Taiwan’s New Residents (co-editor, 2024), Sociology of Decarbonization: The Public Opinion and Challenges of Taiwan’s Net-Zero Transition (co-author, 2024); Writing Taiwan’s Third Sector History (co-editor, 2023); Three Divides: Transformation of Hakka Ethnic Politics in Taiwan (co-author, 2022); The Many Faces of Taiwan’s Cultural Diplomacy (co-editor, 2022); The Ethnic Relations of Hakka Belts in Taiwan and Malaysia (co-editor, 2022).
