Mr. Fried is an independent trade and economic consultant based in Ottawa, Canada. He serves as Senior Advisor to the Albright Stonebridge Group, Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and Advisor to Independent Economics. He is also Chair of the Canadian National Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and participates in expert groups on Canada–US relations and multilateral cooperation.

Before retiring from the Government of Canada in 2020, he was the Prime Minister’s Personal Representative for the G20 and Coordinator for International Economic Relations at the deputy minister level. He contributed to APEC’s Putrajaya Vision 2040 and later advised Global Affairs Canada on its Indo-Pacific strategy.

Previously, he served as Canada’s Ambassador to the WTO (2012–2017), including as Chair of the Dispute Settlement Body and the General Council, and held senior roles such as Ambassador to Japan, Executive Director at the IMF, and chief negotiator on China’s WTO accession. He received the Order of the Rising Sun in 2022.
