Amb. Dr. Christoph HEUSGEN

Amb. Christoph Heusgen was Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) between 2022 and 2025. He was Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations between 2017 and 2021. Before assuming that role, he served as Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York from 2017 to 2021, chairing the UN Security Council in April 2019 and July 2020. From 2005 to 2017, Amb. Heusgen was former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief advisor on foreign and security policy and led the Foreign Policy Department of the Federal Chancellery as Director General. From 1999 to 2005, he headed the political staff of Javier Solana, then High Representative for the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Amb. Christoph Heusgen is a graduate of the University of Saint Gallen in Switzerland, studied at Georgia Southern College in the United States, and at the Sorbonne in Paris. He teaches Political Science at the University of Saint Gallen.
