Hon. Nanaia Mahuta was the 28th minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand from 2020 to 2023. Hon. Mahuta served as a Labour Party Member of Parliament for 27 years, from 1996 to 2023. She made history as the first female Minister for Maori Development and, in 2020, became New Zealand’s first female Minister of Foreign Affairs.

During her tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Mahuta introduced the concept of Indigenous values into Aotearoa New Zealand’s diplomacy, emphasising principles such as partnership, inclusivity, and respect for cultural identity in the conduct of foreign policy. The friendly relations between Taiwan and New Zealand have been strengthened under her leadership.
